Today the 1st Annual Mashpee Holiday Parade took place and it was a noble first attempt. Lots of local groups and businesses sponsored floats or marched in the parade and it wound its way from the local high school through area roadways until it ended in Mashpee Commons, not far from my shop.
This Chinese dragon was part of a float and display put on by a local kung-fu academy.
This cheerful fellow was busy shaking hands and kissing babies as he bounced back and forth across the street. The pink bus was part of his group as well. It's hard to see the corner where the parade was turning onto the street from this shot but there was still lots more to come.
This picture tells the story of much of the parade. It was truly a community event with kids, parents, business people, servicepeople, local bands and more. I always love thinking of events like this taking place simultaneously across the country, around the world in small celebrations that bring people together in a big way.
And then of course there's the big guy in the red suit. I remember him arriving by parade every year when I was a kid and at the end of the parade we'd all line up to sit on his lap and tell him our biggest wish for Christmas that year. It was so exciting and even a little scary to think about, remember?
I always worried Santa would find out about the bad things I did over the year and was always relieved that he either didn't know about them or they weren't really as bad as I had imagined......because he always showed up at my house, no matter how worried I was. My stocking always had treats and an orange in the toe, not a lump of coal and there were always wonderful presents waiting for me under the tree when I got up on Christmas Day.
Local businesses sponsored school groups to decorate trees that were displayed here at Mashpee Commons today. They were displayed in the fountain area across from my shop so I took this picture of my door and windows framed by two of the festive trees.
The parade was not exactly the Macy's or Rose Bowl Parade but it was fun and festive and families were out having fun together and isn't that what the holiday season is all about?
